What is Reiki?

People ask me that question every time I tell them I’m a Reiki Practitioner.

It’s quite simple. I describe it often that it’s a loving and healing energy that is just like Mom’s loving attention.

When a child falls and hurts himself, the mother will lay her hand on that particular spot and give it love and attention. The mother has the intention to take the pain away and often the child accepts and experiences the pain is gone.

We as Reiki practitioners are very much like Mom. We have the intention to help the body heal and through our hands, we channel loving energy into the body.

We are taught how to center ourselves, become still and clear of any distractions so all that loving and healing energy can come through.

We place our hands on the chakras (energy centers) and we use certain symbols that help us focus on certain levels of the body.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: “Rei” which means “God’s Wisdom/Higher Power” and “Ki” means “Life force energy”. Reiki is a spiritual art. The principle teachings of Reiki embrace a life of balance and promotes spiritual growth. But, Reiki is not a religion, nor is it based on any particular religious doctrine. Reiki does not infringe on anyone’s beliefs or personal values. People of many different faiths have discovered the love-energies Reiki offers.

The technique came from Mikao Usui, a Buddhist, born on the 15th of August 1865 in Japan. He was the founder of the ‘Reiki System of Healing’. He developed the system in 1922, it’s a form of alternative medicine. To undergo a session can feel like a wonderful relaxation and a ‘warmth’ that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method and is for everyone, any age, and pregnant women and even animals.
